Course Title: Introduction to Structural Family Therapy
Course Description: This training will begin with the history of family therapy and a review of central concepts (model of functioning family; symptoms of dysfunctional families; hierarchy, boundaries, coalitions, subsystems, complementarity, and patterns of relationships) and corollaries (results, effects, outcomes). We will demonstrate SFT assessment methodologies (seeing versus hearing, larger systems, family life cycle, mapping, restructuring goals and applications of mapping and restructuring goals). We will demonstrate how the SFT therapist engages as part of the system using “joining.” Next, students will be shown the structure of the first session and how to track enactments. Structural Interventions (intensify and focus, unbalancing, enactment, reframing) will be demonstrated, ending with case presentations and video presentations.
